The Carolina Panthers entered Sunday at 4-3 and on a three-game winning streak. So it was safe to say, with a Super Bowl favorite and the NFL's reigning Most Valuable Player coming in, that their Week 8 matchup was a pretty important one.
But unfortunately, almost nothing went right against the Buffalo Bills this afternoon.
Here's everything we know from Sunday's disappointing showing at Bank of America Stadium . . .
Final score
Bills 40, Panthers 9
Keys to the game
-
Stout coming in, the Panthers run defense completely folded against the Bills and running back James Cook. Cook ran for a career-high 219 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
-
64 of Cook's rushing yards came on a long touchdown run, which wasn't Buffalo's only big-time play. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir also took advantage of the shaky defense with a 54-yard scamper to the end zone to start the second half.
-
Quarterback Andy Dalton was ineffective in place of an injured Bryce Young . He turned the ball over three times, with two fumbles and an interception—which limited the offense to just 244 total yards.
It was over when . . .
Already down 19-3 coming out of the break and the Bills on the receiving end of the opening second-half kickoff, the Panthers couldn't afford to allow another score. But they did.
Quarterback Josh Allen connected with Shakir for a 54-yard touchdown less than three minutes into the third quarter. By that point, Buffalo led 26-3.
Players of the game
-
WR Tetairoa McMillan: seven receptions, 99 yards
-
RB Rico Dowdle : eight carries, 54 yards
-
ILB Christian Rozeboom : 12 tackles (two for a loss), pass defensed
What's next?
The Panthers (4-4) will travel up north to Lambeau Field for a Week 9 matchup with the Green Bay Packers (4-1-1).
