The Cleveland Cavaliers are being fined $100,000 for sitting two of their star players on Nov. 12 against the Miami Heat .
Guard Donovan Mitchell and forward Evan Mobley both sat out the game for rest. The league considers this a violation of the the league's Player Participation Policy. Mitchell and Mobley are considered "star" players by the league.
The policy is meant to promote participation in NBA regular season games. It was approved starting in the 2023-24 season and requires healthy players to play in nationally televised games and in in-season tournament games.
Among other things, as per the policy, teams are only allowed to sit one "star" player per game.
Even without Mitchell and Mobley the Cavs won the game 130-112 thanks to fellow "star" player Jarrett Allen who had 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Who is considered a star player by the NBA?
Here's how the NBA classifies a star player, directly from the policy:
"A star player for purposes of the policy is any player who, in any of the prior three seasons, was selected to an All-NBA Team or an NBA All-Star team. This definition also applies, following a given season's All-Star Game, to any player who is named an All-Star during that season."
