INDEPENDENCE — The Cavaliers finally have their first-round matchup .
When the Miami Heat beat the Atlanta Hawks to secure the No. 8 seed, they punched their ticket to face the No. 1-seeded Cavs in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Game 1 is 7 p.m. Sunday , April 20.
Predictions: Miami Heat vs. Cleveland Cavaliers prediction: Who will win NBA playoff series
The Cavs won the regular-season series 2-1, although all of that is thrown out as the NBA's "second season" begins.
Here are three keys to the series for the Cavs in their first-round matchup.
Cavs-Heat playoff series keys: Cleveland's physicality
A couple of years ago, the Cavs were eliminated in the first round by the New York Knicks largely on the basis of physicality and rebounding. That wound has perhaps healed, but the scars remain.
The Cavs spent that offseason determined to find a new level of physicality, which they used to take down the Orlando Magic in seven games in last year's opening round. Once again, the Cavs showing they can go toe-to-toe (and elbow-to-elbow) with teams in playoff basketball could be key.
"I mean, of course, nobody likes being called soft or saying someone's bullying us or something like that, but we know we're not a soft team," Cavs wing Isaac Okoro said. "We know we're a physical team. We're going to go out there and prove that, honestly."
The Cavs have proved they've put the errors of that Knicks series behind them. But they'll have to keep proving it.
Cavs-Heat playoff series keys: winning the possession battle
Playoff basketball is its own animal.
The games are more physical. They're slower. They're more defensive-minded. Statistically, there are fewer possessions and more missed shots.
The Cavs offense has been among the league's best partly because of its spacing, especially on the run. In the playoffs, the expectation is that teams will try to slow them down. In doing that, it becomes a battle of possessions, which puts a premium on rebounding and not turning the ball over. If there are fewer possessions to go around, every loose ball carries additional importance.
The Cavs will be heavily favored over Miami, though they won't be able to just look past a team that recently made a deep playoff run as a surprise team. One of the few things that could even the playing field is if the Heat end up with a few extra possessions each game. It's one of the main things that opens the door to upsets.
"It's almost like the NFL — can't turn it over," Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said. "That's been a big point of emphasis. We've got to be in the plus. When we look at the end-of-game stat sheet, we want to be plus [in] possessions."
Cavs-Heat playoff series keys: Cleveland must handle Miami's zone defense
The Heat play zone defense with one of the highest rates in the league. That becomes the Cavs' No. 1 focus when it comes to specific game-planning for Miami.
Part of the reasoning for the Heat's high emphasis on zone is putting a few offensive-mind players in the least compromising position on defense, but it's a system that has largely worked.
"Yeah, I think they're definitely really, really talented and really good in that regard, as far as the zone, being able to mix it up defensively with their schemes," Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell said. "They're in the gaps. They're always going to play hard. They're always going to be where they need to be and helping each other. So, for us, continue to find our ways that we beat it and then continue to keep making the simple plays over and over."
