CLEMSON — Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney said tight end Ian Schieffelin will miss just the LSU game after he was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence .
"Grow from it, it'll be a learning expereince," Swinney said Aug. 26. "I think we all have a choice, We've all made bad decisions in our lives. You have a choice on how you apply that. You learn from it. You grow from it. I don't have any doubt that he'll do just that."
Swinney added Schieffelin has faced consequences for it "every single day" since the arrest on Aug. 17. According to the Clemson athlete handbook, a player who is arrested and/or charged with a DUI will be "withheld immediately from not less than the next 10% of their intercollegiate (championship segment) competitions."
Schieffelin missing No. 6 Clemson's season opener against No. 9 LSU on Aug. 30 (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC) at Memorial Stadium aligns with Clemson athletics policy. According to a Clemson spokesperson, the suspension, which would have been 1.2 games (10% of 12 games), rounds down to one because there is "no such thing" as a 0.2 suspension.
Schieffelin also announced his charge of driving under the influence was dropped in a statement released by his attorneys on Aug. 26.
"After all the evidence was reviewed, the DUI charge has been dismissed by the City of Clemson Police Department and I accepted a traffic ticket for reckless driving," Schieffelin said in the statement. "As part of the resolution of this matter, I will not be allowed to play in the home opener against LSU. I am determined to learn from this experience and move forward with renewed focus."
It was Schieffelin's first offense, and he was charged with driving under the influence "without BA," inferring he did not submit to a breath test, according to the Clemson City Police Department's incident report obtained by The Greenville News.
Clemson City Police Department also released a statement on social media on Aug. 17, confirming Schieffelin was arrested at 1:47 a.m. and was released on bond at 9:10 a.m.

Schieffelin, 22, joined the football program May 2 after spending four seasons playing on the basketball team. He exhausted his eligibility for basketball but had a final year in his five-year window to play football. He had not played competitive football since ninth grade.
Schieffelin, the oldest but least experienced player in Clemson's tight end room, was relearning the position this preseason. The 6-foot-7, 265-pounder said he has been learning basic plays, blocking and footwork.
With projected starter Olsen Patt-Henry, plus Josh Sapp, Christian Bentancur and 2025 signee Logan Brooking in the mix, it is unknown what impact Schieffelin will have on the field.
