What did ESPN say about Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed's intrigue in 2025?
To say the least, the quarterbacks that comprise the Southeastern Conference in 2025 all have their respective intrigue, including Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed .
The sophomore gunslinger from Nashville, Tennessee, has a prime opportunity in front of him to help provide the extra boost the Aggies need to get over the hump. His ability to maneuver the pocket and display his agility on the ground, combined with his cannon for an arm, makes him an immediate contender to be one of the top quarterbacks in the conference this season.
As many questions as surround the league's signal-callers this season, the competition is on another level. The case can be made for a plethora of quarterbacks in the conference to become the best, but when the time arrives, there will be separation between the pack.
How will Reed separate himself from the others in the league? For starters, it will take him leading Texas A&M to the playoffs. That task is easier said than done with the grueling schedule the Aggies will face this year, but it is not completely out of the realm of possibility.
Having all starters from last season's offensive line will help anchor protection for Reed and allow him time to survey the field and find one of the promising wideouts that head coach Mike Elko brought in this offseason. Although this is just his second year playing collegiate football in Bryan-College Station, Texas, Reed knows how it feels to be thrown into the fire headfirst. His first start came against the Florida Gators , in which he led the Aggies to a 33-20 victory in Gainesville, Florida , with an incredible performance that featured Reed throwing for 178 yards and two scores, while rushing for 83 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
All that said, what do other college football analysts think of the sophomore Aggie? According to ESPN's latest SEC quarterback intrigue , the site mapped out what it will take for Reed to succeed and become one of the best the league has to offer.
The Intrigue
"As a redshirt freshman a year ago, Reed had some big moments in key situations. In his first start, he helped the Aggies beat Florida on the road, passing for two touchdowns and running for another. He came off the bench in the comeback win over LSU and rushed for three touchdowns. Conner Weigman , who has since transferred to Houston , was the Aggies ' starter to open this past season before Reed took over in Week 3 against Florida and came back later in the season after Weigman was injured, starting the final five games. The Aggies lost four of those five games, with Reed throwing nine touchdown passes and six interceptions in that stretch. There was blame to go around for the Aggies ' swoon, but Reed is eager to show in 2025 that he's a much more complete quarterback than some are suggesting he is and that he's not merely a game manager as Texas A&M has what it takes in the offensive line to have success in the running game."
Path To Success
"Any mention of Reed being more of a runner than a passer only fuels his fire. Sure, he is a dynamic runner and averaged 4.7 yards per carry. (For comparison, Mateer averaged 4.6, Manning 4.3, Sellers 4.1 and Lagway 2.) But where Reed has worked the hardest is being a more effective downfield passer, and according to those in and around the Texas A&M program, he has made huge strides in that area in the offseason. Moreover, the Aggies have brought in more speed on the perimeter, which should allow Reed to cash in with explosive plays in the passing game."
Quote To Note
"He understands now what it's like to be a starting quarterback in the SEC. He was in and out of the lineup last season, but what's lost is his growth. Even though we didn't play our best football at the end of the season, he kept growing as a quarterback," second-year head coach Mike Elko said.
