The Atlanta Falcons have made their first major move ahead of the NFL's 2025 free agency period. According to a report from NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, veteran left tackle Jake Matthews has agreed to a two-year, $45 million extension.
Matthews, 33, has been a fixture along the Falcons offensive line since being drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft. While the team had limited options to create cap space ahead of free agency, general manager Terry Fontenot appears to have gotten a deal done just in time for the legal tampering period.
According to Over The Cap , extending Matthews frees up around $11.3 million, which would give the team around $5 million in cap space for the start of free agency.
The former Texas A&M standout has not missed a start for the Falcons since 2015. Matthews' lone Pro Bowl appearance came after his stellar 2018 campaign. While this move helps the team's salary cap in 2025, expect the Falcons to make a few other cap-clearing moves over the next few days.
