As the wins start to come, Florida A&M football players are getting recognition after scoring their second straight victory.
Rattlers running back Jamal Hailey and kicker Daniel Porto earned honors from the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Oct. 27 for their roles in FAMU's 43-35 victory over the Southern Jaguars in Baton Rouge last Saturday, Oct. 25.
Hailey was named the SWAC Newcomer of the Week for having a breakout game in FAMU's offensive shootout with Southern.
Replacing an injured Thad Franklin Jr. midgame, the Western Michigan transfer took starter reps and dazzled the A.W. Mumford Stadium audience in Baton Rouge.
The redshirt junior rushed 19 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns.
Hailey's top play was a 56-yard rushing touchdown that just about iced the game in the Rattlers' favor over the Jaguars. He's FAMU's first single-game 100-yard rusher this season.
Meanwhile, Porto was named the SWAC Co-Specialist of the Week, a game removed from winning the award outright .
The junior from Orlando went four for four on extra points and three for three on field goal attempts.
He also stayed busy on kickoffs as FAMU continued to score against Southern. Porto kicked off nine times for 555 yards and had six touchbacks.
FAMU (3-4, 2-1 in SWAC) hosts Jackson State (5-2, 3-1 in SWAC) for a Week 10 SWAC game, which holds postseason implications this Saturday, Nov. 1.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Eastern Time on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and on Tallahassee's local radio airwaves via 96.1 JAMZ.
