Longtime college football broadcaster and former coach Lee Corso is retiring from his role on " College Gameday ."
The 90-year-old Corso is a fan-favorite co-host of ESPN 's long-running college football pregame show. The former college coach is famous for announcing his picks for big games by putting on the mascot head of the team he's picking.
ESPN announced Thursday that Corso will make one final appearance on the Week 1 edition of "College Gameday" on Aug. 30, marking the end of his 38-year run as a college football analyst.
"For multiple generations, Coach has been the face of our Saturday mornings and the sport we love," the College Gameday account wrote on social media. "Our friend, our coach, our heart ... LC, you will forever be a College GameDay legend!
Corso started the tradition of his headgear picks in 1996 when he revealed that he was picking Ohio State to win by donning the head of mascot Brutus Buckeye. Over his career, Corso has made a total of 430 headgear picks.
"My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and College GameDay for nearly 40 years," said Corso. "I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement."
Corso has been the face of ESPN's "College Gameday" broadcast for years. But the former coach has taken steps back in recent years due to his advanced age and recurring health problems.
With Corso's departure, the primary "College Gameday" broadcast panel includes Nick Saban, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, Kirk Herbstreit and host Rece Davis.
