Former Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei Joining Chargers, New Role in Discussion
D.J. Uiagalelei’s NFL journey is officially underway. After stints at Clemson, Oregon State, and Florida State, the former five-star quarterback has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers . But according to Sports Illustrated’s NFL insider Albert Breer, Uiagalelei’s future might not be at quarterback after all.
Breer recently suggested that Uiagalelei could make the switch to tight end with the Chargers — a move that would certainly raise eyebrows but also make a lot of sense given his physical tools. At 6’4” and 229 pounds, Uiagalelei has the size to potentially thrive in a hybrid role, much like the Saints’ Taysom Hill . If Uiagalelei is willing to embrace a versatile, do-it-all role, he could carve out a long NFL career.
Whether the former Clemson star can successfully transition to tight end remains to be seen, but he certainly brings a strong athletic pedigree to the table. During his time at Clemson from 2020-22, Uiagalelei completed 515-of-861 passes (59.8%) for 5,681 yards with 36 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He also rushed for 913 yards and 15 touchdowns across 275 carries, even hauling in a six-yard reception.
Uiagalelei went 22-6 as Clemson’s starter, tying 1981 national champion Homer Jordan for the seventh-most wins by a quarterback in school history. Statistically, he left Clemson ranked among the program’s all-time leaders in pass attempts, completions, passing touchdowns, and total passing yards.
His best season came in 2022, when he threw for a career-high 2,521 yards and 22 touchdowns, adding 545 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground. That season, Uiagalelei displayed a dual-threat ability, posting standout performances like a five-touchdown day against Wake Forest and a two-touchdown rushing effort against NC State.
Despite the ups and downs of his college career — and two transfers after leaving Clemson — Uiagalelei’s combination of arm strength, size, and athleticism remains intriguing at the professional level. If he can channel his physical gifts into a tight end or “Taysom Hill-style” utility role, the Chargers may have landed a unique weapon.
For now, Uiagalelei is officially a Charger. Where he ultimately lines up on Sundays will be one of the more fascinating storylines to follow this offseason.
