As glamorous as the lifestyle of NBA players may seem, there's a darker side that often comes to light. Over the years, countless reports have surfaced about players cheating on their partners or breaking up their families - all because they get too caught up in the temptations that come with fame.
And recently, Gilbert Arenas opened up about that reality, admitting that many players knowingly make poor choices and get carried away doing things that they shouldn't.
Arenas commented on cheating
Understandably, it is nearly impossible for NBA players to be away from the spotlight. Not only does the season stretch for almost the entire year, but the routine traveling only makes them realize how popular they are in different cities.
Thus, naturally, they have plenty of people looking to get close to them. When models and fans throw themselves at them, it takes serious discipline and self awareness to stay grounded. But, according to Gil, very few actually resist those temptations. In fact, he revealed that many players, including him, get caught in a trap where they have to lie to their loved one for almost everything they do.
Moreover, in a brutally honest moment, the three-time All-Star revealed how his ex-wife made it her mission to catch him red-handed, simply because the web of lies he had spun had started getting to her. Put simply, Arenas revealed a dark picture on how the fame and attention lead to choices that disrupt a normal, off the court life on almost every NBA athlete.
"When the NBA season starts, that's where all the bad habits are. So when the season starts, I'm flying to Miami. Now I'm flying to Atlanta. Now I'm flying to Los Angeles, New York, Houston. Coming in at two or three in the morning. Where am I going? Strip club. So we're partying and drinking and partying and drinking, damn near every city we go," Arenas said. "I lied to my wife every day - 10, 12 lies a day. That's my job - to lie. Her job is to try to catch the lie."
Athletes who do not fall into this trap should be appreciated
Considering that Arenas said, that is why players like LeBron James and Stephen Curry deserve a different level of respect. For more than a decade, they have been the faces of the league, under constant media attention and yet, they have managed to keep their personal lives clean.
Despite all the fame and endless temptations, both these former MVPs have stayed loyal to their families, showing that discipline and love can coexist even under the brightest spotlight.
So it seems safe to assert that while players like Arenas may have struggled to separate their personal lives from their public image, there are still shining examples in today's NBA of players who value their families above everything else. That is why more and more modern-day players entering the league idolize superstars like LBJ and Steph, as they aren't just all-time greats on the court but some of the best examples of how to lead their lives even off the court, without much stress and tension.
