All of Kamryn Dixon's work on her spares paid off Friday, putting the Granville senior bowler into unprecedented territory for her and the Blue Aces.
Dixon's games of 176, 213 and 237 catapulted her to 10th place (626) in the Division I state tournament at HP Lanes , not only leading central Ohio but putting a memorable capper on Granville's first trip to state .
"I've been working incredibly hard on my spares and staying consistent," said Dixon, who averaged 175 this season. "Practices have been really good, so I had high expectations for myself coming into this. I adjusted to the lanes how I wanted and how I was taught, and I just built up from there."
Dixon rolled three strikes in the 10th frame of her second game to top the score of her first game by 37 pins.
"Moving to the next lane, it is hard to adjust because you don't know what to expect with the oil carry, but once I threw my first ball I was feeling really good," said Dixon, who earned second-team all-state honors. "I knew how to adjust and I knew how to go where I wanted my ball to go."
Gahanna Lincoln led three area teams by finishing 10th (3,420).
Coming off sectional and district championships and making their sixth consecutive state appearance, the Lions were 12th through three regulation games, 58 pins out of a top-eight spot needed to advance to the team finals. They ended up 65 pins behind eighth-place Wapakoneta.
Junior Lacey Holden (48th, 531) led Gahanna, followed by senior Jordan Carruthers (54th, 507), juniors Rachel Goldman (55th, 506) and Jessica Goldman (65th, 493) and senior Corinne Montgomery (tied for 66th, 485).
Holden's 201 in her second game was the top individual performance for Gahanna.
"We stated off really slow," coach Todd Burns said. "I thought the girls were good with spares all day, but we didn't strike as much as I thought we were going to. We had a very good day of practice (Thursday) and the girls were all right around 200, so I thought we would score better, but that's all right. …
"The girls were all kind of up and down, but they never gave up."
Junior Sydney Cottrill tied for 58th (499) for a 14th-place Granville team (3,308) that should return its entire lineup behind Dixon. Sophomores Jill Brownfield (70th, 476), Jenna Evans (tied for 81st, 434) and Nyah Painter (85th, 368) were the Blue Aces' other scorers.
Led by sophomore Rachel Johnson (45th, 537), Hilliard Bradley finished 16th (3,075).
Junior Kay Butcher was 68th (496) for the Jaguars, followed by sophomore Hayli Patterson (84th, 404). Junior Natalie Kamm (91st, 271) and senior Cameryn Gale (93rd, 266) bowled two games, and sophomore Avery Hinton (100th, 122) bowled one.
Among area individual qualifiers, Teays Valley senior Kenna Barnes had the top finish, placing 17th (599). London sophomore Abbie Wheeler was 27th (573) and Olentangy Orange senior Ashlyn Nichols tied for 74th (461).
