CLEVELAND — The historic season-long comeback, the likes of which the major leagues have never seen, is complete.
The Guardians clinched the American League Central division on the last day of the regular season via the Detroit Tigers ' loss to the Boston Red Sox . Even though Cleveland's game hadn't finished at the time, the Tigers losing was enough for the Guardians to secure their second consecutive division title.
In doing so, the Guardians raced back from what was once a 15.5-game deficit against the Tigers, the largest comeback in baseball history. The previous record was 15.0 games, held by the 1914 Boston Braves.
On Sept. 27, Cleveland secured their place in the playoffs with a walk-off hit-by-pitch.
Who will Guardians play in the first round of MLB playoffs?
The Guardians winning the division earned them the No. 3 seed in the AL bracket. They'll play the Tigers yet again in a best-of-3 series, with every game held in Cleveland. Last year, the Guardians beat the Tigers in Game 5 of the ALDS on the back of Lane Thomas' earth-shattering grand slam against Skubal .
Detroit decided not to pitch Skubal Sunday, choosing to have him on the road over not having him at home.
MLB playoffs schedule; When is Game 1 of the Wild Card series?
Game 1 between the Guardians and Tigers is set for Tuesday, Sept. 30. Exact times are to be determined.
