CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians have placed outfielder Lane Thomas (right wrist bone bruise) on the injured list retroactive to April 20.
They've also transferred right-handed pitcher Trevor Stephan (elbow) to the 60-day injured list and selected the contract of Will Wilson from Triple-A Columbus. Stephan underwent Tommy John surgery on March 28, 2024, to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Thomas left the home opener on April 8 after being hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative. He had a slash line of .156/.188/.366 with a double and two RBIs in 13 games but hadn't played since April 19.
"Back when I got hit, I got on some medication and it felt better," said Thomas, who had broken his right wrist twice before the latest injury. "I sat out four or five days and then I got that jam-shot base hit in Pittsburgh when I played that first day and it just kind of swelled up after that.
"They didn't necessarily like that. I kind of lost some range of motion. They talked to me and talked to some of the doctors and thought that was the best option, just to try and get some of that out of there and not go through that same cycle again. That's kind of how the decision was made."
Guardians move on Lane Thomas came with longevity in mind
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said the move was more about the long term rather than trying to force Thomas' hand with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox swinging through Progressive Field this week.
"Obviously, Lane's been dealing with the wrist day to day ever since the hit by pitch, and he had good days," Vogt said. "He had some in-between days, and really it was just the pain tolerance.
"It was in question every day, and we're like, 'Lane, look, we wish we could keep you day to day, but let's take 8-10 days, knock this thing out so that it's behind us for the rest of the year.' And really out of fairness for him to be able to be himself and not wonder how's it going to feel today when I wake up."
Will Wilson came to the Guardians in the Rule 5 Draft
Wilson's debut for the Guardians comes after a rollercoaster ride in the minor leagues. He was the 15th pick in the 2019 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels but was traded that offseason to the San Francisco Giants .
He was selected in the Rule 5 Draft, Triple-A phase on Dec. 11, 2024, and has flourished under the Guardians' watch.
In Columbus, Wilson had a slash line of .324/.418/.647 for the Clippers and was leading the International League in home runs (6). He also was second in RBIs (18) and third in slugging percentage (.647) before the call-up.
"Coming over here has been nothing short of awesome," he said. "It's been great. The people have been welcoming. The organization is a winning organization. They play hard-nosed baseball, and that's the kind of player I am, so it ended up being a really good fit. You come in as a Rule 5 guy, not really expecting much, just trying to put your best foot forward, and I tried to do that and they gave me every opportunity to do it as well."
Bryan Rocchio just fine after scary moment Monday against the Yankees
A hit-by-pitch in the Guardians' 6-4 win over the Yankees on April 21 didn't come without Cleveland holding its breath. Bryan Rocchio took a change-up in the eighth inning. He stayed in the game to run but was lifted in the bottom half of the inning.
Rocchio was back in the starting lineup for the second game of a three-game series and batted out of the nine hole.
"I think [he] was mad at me," Vogt said of Rocchio. "I took him out. He wanted to stay in, but I saw it. It didn't look great in the moment and so just out of abundance of caution [he was removed from the game]. Everything came back negative. He's good to go, so he'll be back in there today."
