CLEVELAND — The Guardians began a three-game homestand against the most expensive roster in baseball — the Los Angeles Dodgers — on Memorial Day at Progressive Field , eventually falling 7-2.
The Dodgers, after their record-setting spending frenzy over the last few seasons that was highlighted by the mega-deal worth $700 million, entered the series 32-21 and in first place in the National League West .

Gavin Williams (4-2, 3.94 ERA) took the mound opposite NL Cy Young candidate Yoshinobu Yamamoto (5-3, 1.86 ERA).
First pitch occurred shortly after 6:10 p.m. Here's how Monday's game unfolded.
Guardians lose to Dodgers
Will Smith added a solo home run in the ninth off Joey Cantillo , and the Dodgers beat the Guardians 7-2 to open the series.
Jose Ramirez extends hit streak to 19
Jose Ramirez roped a double to right field in the bottom of the sixth, extending his hit streak to 19 games and his on-base streak to 23 games.
Kyle Manzardo followed with an RBI single to make it 6-2.
Guardians trail Dodgers: score
The Dodgers again put together a two-run inning, this time in the sixth and this time via singles from Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman near the top of L.A.'s star-studded lineup.

It's now 6-1 Dodgers.
Dodgers add two runs on Gavin Williams in fifth inning
The Dodgers have extended their lead to 4-1 and ousted Gavin Williams from the game after a lengthy fifth inning.
Teoscar Hernandez singled home a run and Max Muncy brought home another run via a sacrifice fly. The Dodgers at one point loaded the bases, which eventually led to Williams exiting the game with a career-high 109 pitches.
Matt Festa entered the game and eventually ended the inning with a run-down between first and second base.

Guardians, Dodgers score update
The Guardians are on the board, but they nearly tied it twice.

First, with a runner on, Angel Martinez missed a two-run home run by a couple of feet, just pulling a line drive down the right field line into foul territory. He settled for a single to right-center field that ended Yamamoto's no-hit bid in the third inning.
Later, with two runners in scoring position, Steven Kwan grounded a ball to the left side of the infield. Gabriel Arias broke for home (which was the right decision) as Martinez broke for third base (which was the wrong decision). The Guardians cut the Dodgers lead to 2-1, but they also ran themselves out of a potential rally to tie it.
Andy Pages extends Dodgers' lead over Guardians
It wasn't as majestic as a towering Ohtani home run, but the Dodgers again brought home a run against Gavin Williams in the second inning.

This time, it was Andy Pages fighting off a ball to the opposite field to score Will Smith from third.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto , meanwhile, has looked downright nasty on the mound. He's perfect through two innings, and he's struck out four of the six batters he's faced thus far.

Guardians, Dodgers score: Shohei Ohtani hits leadoff home run off Gavin Williams
One pitch, one run. And Shohei Ohtani makes it instantly clear why he's the best talent in baseball, hands down.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams opened Monday's game with a fastball down and inside, and Ohtani crushed it for a solo home run. It was 115 mph off the bat and a no-doubter.

The Guardians began a six-game homestand Monday night against the Dodgers. After a three-game set against L.A., Cleveland will welcome the Angels for a three-game weekend series. The Guardians then go on the road to play the Yankees in New York.
