The Jacksonville Jaguars didn't have a fifth-round pick on the third day of the 2025 NFL Draft, but they do have a connection to one of the players selected.
After falling well below perceived pre-draft expectations and being passed over by his eventual team multiple times, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders finally heard his name called, drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 144th-overall pick, the sixth pick in the fifth round.
Sanders went to school with Jaguars second-overall pick Travis Hunter .
Sanders was widely expected to be selected on either Day 1 or Day 2 of the NFL Draft, but fell for uncertain reasons, perhaps a combination of his playing career and the fact that he's the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, the head coach at Colorado.
BOLD. GROUND ZERO. Jacksonville Jaguars 'making a statement' with Travis Hunter. It will speak loudly on future
Sanders went to school with Hunter for all three years of the players' careers at Jackson State (2022) and Colorado (2023-24) as his ultimate running-mate.
As Sanders was waiting to hear his name, Hunter was recorded reacting to the selection, cheering on his former teammate.
"Yes, sir! Shedeur to the Browns, let's get it," the rookie playmaker exclaimed while on a FaceTime video call with Sanders and others at the latter's party.
The Colorado Buffaloes posted Hunter's reaction to X, the site formerly known as Twitter.
Sanders and Hunter's jerseys were recently retired after the two entered the NFL Draft and (now) moved on to their respective teams.
At Colorado, Sanders completed 71.8% of his passes, the all-time career FBS record. He totaled 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns, and just 13 interceptions as one of the best quarterbacks at protecting the football.
In 2024, Sanders led the Big 12 in essentially every passing category, including completions (353), attempts (477), completion percentage (74%), yards (4,134), touchdowns (37) and air yards per attempt (9.27).
His success was helped by his former teammate and close friend, Hunter, who caught 153 passes for 1,979 yards and 20 touchdowns over two years.
Ironically, the Jaguars traded with the Browns for Hunter. While the Browns did not use Jacksonville's selection they handed over for the deal to draft Hunter, the teams come full circle with the Colorado sensations joining teams involved in the biggest trade in recent draft history.
