The Minnesota Twins have done effectively nothing at each of the past two trade deadlines. The 2025 version is quickly approaching and Rocco Baldelli's team sits at 47-49 .
There are just two weeks, and 12 games, separating now from July 31st at 5 pm CDT. Derek Falvey will need to make a decision as to whether his team will be buyers or sellers, and to what extent.
Other organizations believe the MN Twins will sell. It remains to be seen how substantial the pieces moved may be. Joe Ryan would be among the most expensive of them, and he at least finds the possibility intruiging.

Trade season has sparked Minnesota Twins Joe Ryan's interest
Currently in Atlanta as a Minnesota Twins representative for the All-Star Game, along with teammate Byron Buxton , Joe Ryan was asked about trade rumors. While his teammate Buxton snuffed out that conversation before it could start, Ryan didn't go quite so far.

"The trade stuff? I don't know, it's fun for me. July is awesome. I think everyone in the clubhouse is excited seeing where guys are going to go around the league. You don't know and I think that's exciting. Being someone that could get traded, it would be exciting. I do love Minnesota and I love where I'm at so, it would be sad definitely hard to go, but it's never up to me."
The question was posed by Boston Red Sox beat writer Rob Bradford . Boston has been connected to Ryan and is a possible destination should the Twins make him available.
The answer from Ryan was at least a bit eyebrow raising. Minnesota acquired him as a prospect from Tampa Bay in exchange for Nelson Cruz . They have unlocked him to the point of being an All-Star pitcher that owns a career-best 2.72 ERA (3.20 FIP) with a 121/23 K/BB across 109 1/3 innings this season.
Calling the deadline "fun for me" and suggesting "it's exciting" when pressed on the prospect of being traded stings a bit. I'm sure it's not lost on Ryan that the Pohlad family hasn't invested in the team, and that they are on the outside of the playoffs looking in. As a competitor you want to be in a position where you can succeed to the greatest extent. It's unfortunate that the MN Twins have willingly opted against that goal.
MN Twins should command haul for Joe Ryan
Whether or not the Minnesota Twins actually move Joe Ryan or not remains to be seen. He would be a much more significant piece than relievers like Jhoan Duran or Griffin Jax . That said, no team opting to land his services will do so for cheap.
Ryan is 29 years old, but he just hit arbitration for the first time this season. He's under contract for a paltry $3 million and isn't a free agent until 2028. Minnesota flipped a 27-year-old Jose Berrios , but he was a year closer to free agency, and they landed two top 100 prospects ( Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson ).

The Twins best chance to supplement the system in a massive way would be to move Ryan. That would also set the big league product back, especially without a willingness to spend on a free agent starting pitcher.
They'll need to consider all options in the weeks ahead. Interestingly as well, Minnesota hosts the Boston Red Sox from July 28-30. It would be hard to watch him simply switch dugouts, even if there is a little excitement in it for him.
