Miami Dolphins interim GM Champ Kelly looks smart not trading Achane, Waddle | Schad
MIAMI GARDENS — Wearing a sharp green suit, Miami Dolphins interim general manager Champ Kelly hugged players and coaches as they ran off the field after a stunning 30-13 upset of the Buffalo Bills .
The Bills should be green with envy.
I know, I know, the Bills are the class of the AFC East and they've got a league MVP and some fine local wings establishments.
But they don't have star Dolphins receiver Jaylen Waddle , and they wanted him.
According to an NFL Network report , the Dolphins turned down 1st- and 3rd-round picks from the Bills for Waddle. They also say teams inquired about running back De'Von Achane.
Those deals were turned down, too.
"I want to be here," Achane said, after the game. "I was glad, you know, neither one of us is gone."
Achane, whose contract is up after next season, should be extended, not traded.
What did he do to the Bills?
How about 174 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Oh, and 51 receiving yards.
"Playmaker," Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. "Playmaker."
Dolphins didn't trade team MVP, De'Von Achane
Achane, 24, is Miami's best player.
Miami's second-best playmaker? It's receiver Waddle, Tua's teammate in college, at Alabama.
Waddle, 26, has three more seasons on his contract. He, too, should be a part of Miami's future rebuild.
Will Miami re-visit trading him this offseason? It's certainly possible.
Would Dolphins re-visit Jaylen Waddle trade?
But on this day, Waddle posted 84 receiving yards, including a splending 38-yard touchdown catch on a go route from Tua.
After the game, Waddle was asked about hearing his name in trade reports.
"I don't really, like, let too much get to me," said Waddle, who never, ever lets himself waddle too long into anything negative. "But, yeah, man, it was a good game.
Waddle grinned.
Achane and Waddle. Waddle and Achane.
"He's a special player," Waddle said of Achane. "A special talent."
Dolphins didn't trade Jaylen Waddle, De'Von Achane and they star
There's no way Miami stops Buffalo's seven-game win streak in the series if either is traded on deadline day.
"I've never once thought about those dudes not as a Dolphin," Miami coach Mike McDaniel said after the upset.
Miami improved to 3-7 and who knows ― is a run to 6-7 possible with Washington, New Orleans and the Jets on deck?
"They chose to believe," McDaniel said. "They continued to believe."
The Dolphins let general manager Chris Grier go last week. It's a move that seemed inevitable. Some have felt the same way about McDaniel.
But after a defeat of the Bills, and two impressive victories in the last three weeks, the decision by owner Stephen Ross to let McDaniel continue to coach appears to have been a prudent one.
The Dolphins have not quit.
And not trading Waddle and Achane certainly had the desired effect.
