Michael Penix explains how fight broke out at Falcons-Titans practice

Things got a bit chippy during the second joint practice between the Atlanta Falcons and the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday morning. A fight broke out between the two teams after quarterback Michael Penix Jr. completed a deep pass to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud.

The play drew cheers from the crowd in attendance, but the Titans didn't appreciate the Falcons celebrating after the catch. The teams got heated and a minor fight broke out. Penix found himself in the middle of the scrum after being knocked down to the ground.

After practice, the normally reserved Penix explained how it all went down. Apparently, the Titans players had been chirping at the Falcons QB throughout practice, and once he completed the pass to McCloud, Penix uncharacteristically had some words for Tennessee's defense.

"I gave them my words, and probably went a little too far," Penix told reporters . "I was somebody else. I don't even remember."

Penix recalled finding himself on the ground and not being sure of exactly what happened.

“I don't know where I was at in it. It was a lot of people. I knew I was down there somewhere. I wasn't the only one, though.”

Penix couldn't recall another time he was involved in a practice scrum, and the Falcons would prefer to keep their franchise quarterback safe going forward.

Falcons quarterbacks coach DJ Williams commented on the fight after practice, saying that while he doesn't want to see fighting, he liked the way the players had their quarterback's back.

"Obviously, you don't want that, but I take some positive out of it," said Williams. "Like you saw the guys take up for him and I think that speaks to his leadership and who he is in that locker room. Obviously as coaches we're upstairs, they're downstairs. We don't really see a lot, but obviously he has a relationship and the trust of the guys because everybody ran to his defense. So, I think that's a good thing for the Falcons."

Check out the pass that led the fight below, as shared by the team's social media account.
