After the big contract rework between the Cincinnati Bengals and Trey Hendrickson , we wrote that the two sides could be on the way to the franchise tag in 2026 .
That idea was simple enough: Hendrickson remains slated for free agency in 2026 and the rework didn't weave a no-tag clause into his contract, either.
New details only add to this idea. According to CBS Sports' Joel Corry , Hendrickson's adjusted contract means a roughly $25 million cap number this year, plus a void year in 2026.
Meaning, a tag would only cost the Bengals $30.2 million in 2026.

It's a stunning little development on the contract front, as prior reporting suggested a roughly $34 million cap number for a tag next year.
As such, it continues to be a little surprising that Hendrickson and his reps didn't angle for more tag-proof details. But then again, perhaps they're just fine with a year-to-year situation that keeps him in Cincinnati.
For the Bengals, if Hendrickson plays well again this year, bumping him up another $5 million and having a tag would equate to $55 million over two years with no long-term commitments, which wouldn't have them likely complaining, either.
