The Pittsburgh Penguins ' goaltending situation has been, at the very least, stable, with Tristan Jarry and Arturs Silovs working in a platoon situation and helping the team to a 6-2-1 start. Don't forget, though, about prospect Sergei Murashov.
Murashov, a Russian prospect who could well be the future of the goaltending spot in the organization, seems to be doing his best to remind everyone that he's still highly relevant despite being with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. On Monday, he was named the Howie's Hockey Tape AHL Player of the Week.
In two starts for the Penguins' top affiliate last week, Murashov stopped 51 of 52 shots in earning two wins, a .981 save percentage and success to the tune of one goal in 120 minutes of ice time. That included the second shutout of his AHL career, a 25-save effort against the Charlotte Checkers.
After having a strong training camp with the Penguins, Murashov, 21, is 5-0-0, helping to lead WBS to a 7-0-0-0 start. He leads the AHL in wins, ranks second with a 1.40 goals-against average and two shutouts and third with a .949 save percentage.
The Penguins drafted Murashov in the fourth round in 2022. There was some thought that he could start the season in the NHL — where he has yet to make his debut — but the Penguins opted to bring in Silovs. That doesn't mean Murashov is off the radar. Far from it.
In his career in the AHL, he is 17-3-0 with a 2.34 GAA and a .921 save percentage, with two shutouts. He spent more time with Wheeling of the ECHL than the AHL last season, his first in North America, going 17-7-1 with a 2.40 GAA and .922 save percentage.
