Rapid Reaction: Oklahoma rallies for win over Auburn

A late touchdown drive led by John Mateer and a late sack by R Mason Thomas sealed No. 12 Oklahoma 's 24-17, come-from-behind over No. 25 Auburn on Saturday.

Mateer ran for a nine-yard touchdown with 4:54 left to give the Sooners a 22-17 lead. The run capped a six-play, 75-yard drive, the Sooners' longest in a day Auburn mostly kept them stifled. Mateer ultimately ran for 27 yards on 10 carries with the score and went 24 of 36 passing for 271 yards and another touchdown.

Isaiah Sategna proved a big reason for the win, as well. The wide receiver who transferred from Arkansas in the offseason hauled in nine passes for 127 yards and caught Mateer's touchdown pass.

Oklahoma's defense limited Auburn to just 287 yards of total offense, ruining Jackson Arnold 's return to Norman. Arnold, Auburn's quarterback, finished 21 of 32 with 221 yards and a touchdown.

Oklahoma defense comes up big

The Sooners' 10th sack of the game resulted in an Auburn safety and provided Oklahoma with a seven-point lead with 1:06 left. The Tigers were forced into a 4th-and-29 from their own 4 and R Mason Thomas, who didn't play in the first half after serving a suspension because of last week's targeting penalty, picked up the two points. The Sooners could ultimately kneel on the ball to clinch their fourth win.

Mateer, Sategna keep OU alive

Isaiah Sategna's best game in an Oklahoma uniform, in his college career, even, continued in response to Auburn's touchdown. The wide receiver hauled in a 31-yard pass from Mateer to get the Sooners down to the Tigers' 9. The officials initally called the pass incomplete, saying Sategna was juggling the ball as he went out of bounds. But upon review, the call was overturned.

On the very next play, Mateer went into the end zone on a nine-yard quarterback draw to give his team the lead again, 22-17, with 4:54 to play.

Tigers convert two fourth downs to take lead

Auburn converted two fourth downs on its drive following Sandell's third field goal. Jackson Arnold ran for 15 yards on 4th-and-11 to the OU 23, then an Oklahoma pass interference call on 4th-and-6 resulted in the Tigers taking the ball down to the OU 4. On the very next play, Malcolm Simmons ran in from four yards and Alex McPherson followed with the point-after to give the Tigers their first lead of the game with 7:08 left.

Tigers miss chance to tie and OU extends

One play is all it took for Auburn to look alive. Jeremiah Cobb ran up the middle on the Tigers' third series of the quarter for a gain of 44 yards to the OU 33. But, as it has gone Saturday, Auburn could do little more. They gained just one more yard before attempting a 50-yard field goal. It missed.

Mateer led OU in response. He completed five straight passes on the Sooners' ensuing drive, getting OU to the Auburn 10 and into a 4th-and-2 situation. Initially, it looked like coach Brent Venables would go for it, but as the clock expired on the quarter, Tate Sandell came out for another field goal to make it 16-10, Oklahoma, heading to the fourth.

Offenses still struggling

Through two drives, Auburn has a total of zero yards. Oklahoma followed its touchdown drive with its own three-and-out. With less than five minutes to play in the third quarter, the Sooners have 173 yards and Auburn has 165. The Tigers take back over with 4:51 left to play in the quarter.

Sooners break tie in third

After a whole bunch of nothing for both teams in their opening drives of the third quarter, Oklahoma found its offensive footing on its second.

Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle picked up the pace and the Sooners went 46 yards in 11 plays over 4:21 to get into scoring range. Auburn tightened things inside its own 20, though, forcing Tate Sandell to come on for a 32-yard field goal to provide OU with a 13-10 lead with 8:36 left in the third quarter.

Auburn ties it before half

Auburn's final drive of the half resulted in its best drive of the half. The Tigers tied the game at 10 when Jackson Arnold found Cam Coleman for two-yard touchdown pass with 1:08 left. As a whole, Auburn put together a nine-play, 60-yard series covering 3:17 to knot things up.

Oklahoma stats leaders at the break:

  • Mateer: 8 of 16, 104 yards, 1 touchdown

  • Tory Blaylock: 6 rushes, 13 yards

  • Isaiah Sategna: 3 receptions, 62 yards, 1 touchdown

Mateer loses it

Auburn followed Oklahoma's score with a three-and-out for the third time in the game. Oklahoma looked like it was marching again after back-to-back completions of 29 and 19 yards to get to Tigers territory. But Mateer lost the ball shortly after the snap after the 19-yard gain and Auburn recovered at its own 34 to avoid falling behind by two scores with 7:40 left in the half.

Sategna finds paydirt

Gifted with great field position, Oklahoma's offense needed just two plays to score the game's first touchdown.

Tory Blaylock was stopped behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of two on the first play. But Mateer found Isaiah Sategna wide open on the left sideline for a 24-yard touchdown pass on the next play.

With 10:45 left in the first half, Oklahoma leads, 10-3.

OU defense comes alive as Auburn's offense sputters

The Sooners' third drive resulted in a punt that pinned Auburn at its own 3. Jackson Arnold found Cam Coleman for a gain of 40 on the first play of the series before Oklahoma's defense woke up. Over the next nine plays, Auburn went all the way back to its own 12 thanks to a combination of three penalties, a sack and a rush resulting in a loss of 12. That loss of 12 came as Auburn's punting team botched things, giving the ball back to OU with great field possession.

Trading Nothing

Oklahoma responded to Auburn's score by picking up just four yards on three plays before punting. Auburn did even less in its return, losing a yard on three plays before punting away, as well. At the end of the first quarter, Oklahoma carried a 3rd-and-2 into the second.

End of 1st: Oklahoma 3, Auburn 3.

Arnold not the same

In Auburn's second series, Arnold looked as good as he ever did with the Sooners. On the first play, from the Auburn 7, he found Cam Coleman on a deep ball over the middle for a gain of 46 yards. Three plays later, on 3rd-and-10, he scambled to the Oklahoma 36 for a gain of 11 yards and a first down. The Tigers made it to the OU 4 but were forced into a field goal, tying the game a 3 with 3:56 left in the first.

Arnold sacked, Auburn shocked

Auburn received the opening kick and immediately went three-and-out. Taylor Wein's sack of former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold on 3rd-and-7 at the Auburn 16 sent the Norman crowd into a tizzy and the Tigers were forced to punt.

After Oklahoma started driving into Auburn territory, the Tigers stripped wide receiver Isaiah Sategna after he caught a pass over the middle from Mateer inside the Auburn 40. Kayin Lee scooped up the football and ran 60 yards to the end zone, giving the visitors a quick 7-0. The officials looked at the replay for several minutes before determining Sategna had not yet made a football move, resulting in an incompletion rather than a fumble.

The Oklahoma offense stalled outside the Auburn 30, though, and Tate Sandell came on for 49-yard field goal to provide the Sooners an early 3-0 lead with 8:32 left in the first quarter.

Oklahoma vs Auburn predictions, picks, odds

Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Saturday, Sept. 20

  • Oklahoma 31, Auburn 17:The Oklahoma Sooners defense has been dominant to start the season. They're very good against the run, and when they get the opportunity to get after the passer, they've been incredibly effective. Auburn wants to run the ball and run it a lot and that plays right into Oklahoma's strength as a team. The Tigers won't want to rely on quarterback Jackson Arnold to throw them to a victory in this game.
