Oregon Ducks punter James Ferguson-Reynolds earns prestigious honor after Week 7 effort
Thanks to the Oregon Ducks ' explosive offense, punter James Ferguson-Reynolds didn't see the field much in the first five weeks. In fact, he didn't see the field at all — outside of his holding duties on field goals and PATs — in the Ducks ' season-opening victory over Montana State.
From there, Ferguson-Reynolds lined up to punt nine times over the next four games — one of which he ran for 21 yards and a first down against Oregon State . He'd been solid in limited opportunities, averaging 38.8 yards per punt with several downed inside the 20-yard line.
But he excelled in Week 7 against the Indiana Hoosiers .
Getting the most action he'd seen all season, Ferguson-Reynolds made the most of it. By game's end, the Australian had punted the ball four times for an average of 50.3 yards per punt, a mark that is synonymous with NFL punters. He also had one punt downed at the Indiana two-yard line, pinning them back and ultimately forcing a three-and-out.
The performance by Ferguson-Reynolds, who transferred to Oregon after three seasons at Boise State , earned him recognition on a national level, as he was awarded with the Ray Guy Award as the Punter of the Week in college football.
In a disappointing day overall for the Ducks , Ferguson-Reynolds was certainly a bright spot and put forth an effort that is worth celebrating despite the loss.
