The Carolina Panthers have taken a step towards locking in at least one of their centers this offseason.
As first reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Friday morning, the team has placed an original-round tender on restricted free-agent center Cade Mays. The tender is worth approximately $3.2 million.
If Mays, a sixth-round pick by Carolina back in 2022, signs an offer sheet with another team, the tender would allow the Panthers a chance to recoup a sixth-round pick for the loss. To collect on that compensation, Carolina would have to fail to match any other potential offer the 25-year-old reaches.
Mays started at center for eight of the Panthers' final nine games this past season. Per Pro Football Focus, he allowed just 10 pressures (none of them sacks) over 308 pass-blocking opportunities in 2024.
The Panthers are also interested in bringing back Austin Corbett, who began the campaign as the team's starting center.
