Bear Bachmeier has a new fan in Portland State head coach Bruce Barnum — who says BYU's true freshman QB reminds him of a specific mythical creature.
"I watched him during pregame, because I hoped his height wasn't right or his weight wasn't right, but then I looked at his (hindquarters) and his legs and he looked like a (expletive) centaur," Barnum said after Portland State's 69-0 loss to the Cougars Saturday night.
"He was throwing the ball well, durable, fast, smart, I liked his release, he's taller than I thought he was and he's a good football player.
The Vikings surrendered 468 rushing yards to BYU, with LJ Martin leading the way with 131 yards on eight carries. Conversely, Portland State finished in the red with -5 rushing yards as a team, along with just 51 yards of total team offense.
"(Martin)'s a talented kid, and their scheme is what it is," Barnum said. "Size caught up to us, they wore our (expletive) out."
Despite the loss, Barnum was still complimentary of BYU — he said he enjoyed the gameday atmosphere at LaVell Edwards Stadium and likened it to an AC/DC concert — and that he's rooting for the Cougars going forward.
"I was obviously very impressed with their defense," Barnum said of BYU. "They wore us out ... that was a long day in Mudville, boys and girls. But it is what it is, I told (BYU) coach (Kalani) Sitake he has a good football team and to go win them all."
