The Denver Broncos have clearly wanted to add a high-profile wide receiver to Sean Payton's offense.
During a pregame appearance before Thursday Night Football , NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Stefon Diggs ' decision during NFL free agency came down to the Broncos and New England Patriots . Diggs ended up landing in Foxborough, signing a three-year, $63.5 million contract this spring.
Diggs has totaled 59 receptions for 659 yards and three touchdowns through 11 games with the Patriots. He has more receptions and yards than any of Denver's receivers this fall (but a trio of Broncos have more than three TDs).
In addition to pursuing Diggs during free agency, Denver's front office also reached out to the Miami Dolphins about Jaylen Waddle ahead of the NFL trade deadline earlier this month, but Miami's asking price was too steep. In April, Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka likely would have been a top candidate for the Broncos at pick No. 20, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took the receiver one spot before Denver at pick No. 19.
So over the last nine months, the Broncos have missed out on three notable receivers. This week, the team signed Lil'Jordan Humphrey off the New York Giants ' practice squad to shore up their depth at the position. Denver now has six receivers on the active roster: Courtland Sutton , Troy Franklin , Pat Bryant , Marvim Mims, Trent Sherfield and LJH.
