- What will Ryan Grubb Alabama football offense look like? Germie Bernard knows better than anyone
Ryan Grubb could have given a one-word answer if he wanted to.
The new Alabama football offensive coordinator was given a simple prompt: "How would you describe yourself as a play caller?"
"Aggressive," Grubb said, taking a beat. "We're going to be aggressive."
Grubb knows what an aggressive offense looks like when it's at its best. It's an offense that is responsible with the football, consistently moving forward, matriculating down the field and calculating the right opportunity to "take the shot."
Germie Bernard knew exactly what Grubb meant, standing behind a mass of reporters listening to the incoming Crimson Tide play caller describe an offense the second-year Alabama wide receiver has already been a part of.
While listening to Grubb speak, Bernard was putting the pieces together.
"Just to be able to have that system back, and especially with the guys that we have," Bernard said, "I know that we'll be able to recreate some good things."
So what did the Grubb offense look like with Bernard at Washington?
"Explosive," Bernard said.
It was an offense with a quarterback — Michael Penix Jr. — who led the Pac-12 in pass attempts, passing yards, passing yards per game and interceptions, finishing second in the Heisman Trophy race to LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels and winning the Maxwell Award.
It was an offense with two 1,000-yard receivers, with Rome Odunze , the All-American who led the conference in catches and receiving yards, and Ja'lynn Polk, with Dillon Johnson , the 1,100-yard rusher who led the Pac-12 in rushing touchdowns.
It's an offense that took Washington to the College Football Playoff National Championship.
That Washington offense was one in which Bernard wasn't a featured weapon. He left for Alabama with Kalen DeBoer after a 34-catch, 419-yard season and four touchdowns. But it's an offense Bernard feels the Crimson Tide already had at its disposal even before Grubb's arrival.
"(Grubb) didn't come in and just change the whole system around," Bernard said. "Like, there is a system in place that coach (Kalen) DeBoer has put in. Each offensive coordinator puts in his own little inputs, but for the most part, it's really the same. He brought some of his NFL terminology and then the way that we construct things is a little different. But, for the most part, it's the same."
Bernard knows how explosive Alabama could be in 2025.
Trade Odunze and Polk for Bernard and Ryan Williams , not to mention weapons like Isaiah Horton , Rico Scott, Derek Meadows and Cole Adams at receiver, and Jam Miller and Richard Young headlining the running back room. Add Grubb's diligence, his detail-oriented nature, his scheme that compliments its players, and Bernard believes something special is being built, something that will "help everybody get to the next level."
"He just wants the best out of everybody, so he coaches everybody hard," Bernard said. "Most importantly, he's just aggressive with the way that he calls plays. He's not afraid to take any chances, take any shots."
So for Bernard, when Grubb took that beat after he described his play calling as aggressive, he didn't think there was very much more to say.
"We see it on tape," Bernard said. "So, I mean, I would agree with it."
