There are a few things that frustrate Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin more than unforced errors. In the Steelers' 17-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night, the team was sloppy and, as Tomlin put it, had far too many "self-inflicted wounds" that the team just couldn't overcome.
In his postgame press conference, Tomlin noted how damaging turnovers and penalties were in the loss. After being very sharp in the first preseason game, the Steelers quarterbacks struggled on Saturday. All three, Mason Rudolph , Skylar Thomas, and Logan Woodside , each had an interception. Pittsburgh balanced it out somewhat by forcing two fumbles, but they still lost the turnover battle, which is a recipe for a loss in the regular season.
Pittsburgh was also responsible for seven penalties. One of those, a roughing the kicker, kept a Bucs drive alive, which they turned into points. These are the small mistakes that add up over a system and separate the top teams from the rest.
