With the preseason in the books, the Pittsburgh Steelers ' next order of business is to trim their training camp roster down from 90 to just 53 by the Tuesday deadline. The team has already announced nearly a dozen cuts but there will be more roster shuffling to come.
The Steelers also have the option to place two players in short-term IR prior to the team's cut down to 53 players. These moves have to be announced on the day of final cuts. Pittsburgh has two perfect candidates for short-term IR and they both happen to be rookies.
Quarterback Will Howard fractured a bone in his hand on a center exchange and has missed all of the preseason. With how well Skylar Thompson has played, tucking Howard away on IR is a great way to keep him, and at the same time have the three best quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
Another rookie who could end up on IR is defensive tackle Derrick Harmon . Harmon suffered a sprained MCL in the team's final preseason game, and he could miss a month. The Steelers' first regular-season game is just two weeks away, so Pittsburgh could stash Harmon away so he's fully healthy a few games into the season.
