Michael Porter Jr. has been sharing plenty lately, but his latest Nikola Jokic story takes the cake for comedy. According to MPJ, The Joker hit him with some R-rated advice in a text right after he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets.
"It was tough saying goodbye to my teammates, especially Aaron (Gordon) and Jamal (Murray), the guys that have been there for a long time," Porter Jr. said on "Glory Daze." " They just all kind of texted in the group chat and the only thing Nikola said is 'Wrap it up out there in New York City.'"
"He said, 'Make sure you wear condom out there.' That's all he said. That was his goodbye to me," MPJ added, grinning from ear to ear.
It was a short message, but one that perfectly captured Jokic's sense of humor, the kind of dry wit that always cut through the locker room. That said, given MPJ's recent admission about 'struggling with women,' nothing could be more appropriate than the three-time MVP's farexwell reminder.
Jokic's offbeat humor shows up again
Nikola's moniker came from its proximity to his last name, but he is indeed a jokester. Jokic routinely gives the most hilarious soundbites, like the time he called himself "a freak of nature" after attempting a rather casual two-handed dunk and telling Luka Doncic to stay on the bench as he drew up a play during the All-Star game.
That mix of blunt honesty and humor has always been Jokic's way of connecting with teammates. He isn't the type to give long speeches or emotional farewells, but a quick one-liner is often enough to break the tension and leave everyone laughing.
Besides the routine triple-doubles, the humor is a part of what makes the Serbian big man so unique in today's NBA. Teammates know they can rely on him to set the tone in big games, but they also know he'll crack a joke in the quiet moments when the mood needs lifting.
It's emotional seeing somebody you win a championship with go on to the next chapter of his basketball career, but Jokic decided he'd rather hand out laughs than tears.
MPJ and Joker's relationship in Denver
Jokic and Porter Jr. played together for six seasons for the Denver Nuggets . They achieved a lot of success, making the playoffs and advancing past the first round each time, ultimately capturing the title in 2023. As always, Jokic liked to keep it blunt and straightforward.
For instance, amidst MPJ's shooting slump in the hard-fought series against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the 2025 playoffs, Joker offered some direct advice.
"Nobody wants to miss shots, of course, and he's probably one of the best shooters in the league," Jokic said while cutting off a reporter asking what his message to MPJ was. "When he cannot make shots he's definitely frustrated with himself, but he's open, he needs to take it, and we want him to take a shot. So, (the message is), keep shooting."
One other time, Jokic had more direct words aimed at Porter Jr.'s poor performance in Game 1 of the 2025 playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers.
"If you're not going to be engaged right now, then you're not supposed to be playing this sport," Jokic said regarding MPJ's three points in 26 minutes during that game.
With all these things considered, Jokic's goodbye to Porter Jr. was nothing out of character. On the floor, he has never hesitated to push his teammates with blunt feedback, whether it was urging Porter to keep shooting through a slump or challenging his focus in the middle of a playoff series.
Away from the game, though, Jokic has always balanced that edge with humor, the kind that keeps the locker room loose.
