Instant reaction: Texas A&M beats South Carolina behind historic second-half comeback

No. 3 Texas A&M (10-0, 7-0 SEC) is 10-0 for the first time since 1992 after mounting what is now the biggest comeback in both SEC (since 2004) and program history after defeating South Carolina (3-7, 1-7 SEC) 31-30 after trailing 30-3 at halftime.

Texas A&M star quarterback Marcel Reed, who played by far his worst half of football amid his young career, looked like a completely different player in the second half, passing for three touchdowns while using his legs to pick up a key fourth down that led to the Aggies' first touchdown of the day.

Before today, SEC teams were 0-286 after trailing by more than 27 points since 2004. For Texas A&M, this is by far the largest comeback in program history, and it further proved that, despite the poor start, this team is a National Championship contender that should receive more praise for the way they responded when the chips were down.

Texas A&M's defense, which shut out South Carolina in the second half, deserves substantial praise, recording four sacks and ten tackles for loss, including two key sacks during the Gamecocks' final drive.

The Aggies can breathe now, entering next week's home matchup vs. FCS Samford as a heavy favorite before facing the Texas Longhorns in Austin on Black Friday.

FINAL: Texas A&M 31, South Carolina 30

Total Yards: Texas A&M 503, South Carolina 388

South Carolina, after being outscored 28-0 in the second half, nearly pulled off the upset in the final minutes, but after Texas A&M's defense sacks QB LaNorris Sellers two times on the final drive, the Gamecocks' lack of timeouts led to the Aggies' biggest comeback in both SEC and program history.

Halftime: South Carolina 30, Texas A&M 3

For this writer, I can't think of a worse performance from a Texas A&M team with this amount of talent, as starting quarterback Marcel Reed, whose Heisman campaign has officially ended, is playing with zero confidence and looking like a shell of himself after two interceptions, while the Aggie O-line has also struggled immensely.

For South Carolina, the Gamecocks are simply taking advantage of the Aggies' mistakes, which has led to an embarrassing 30-3 deficit that will have implications on Texas A&M's CFP standing if this result holds.

Game over? South Carolina connects on 80-yard touchdown reception (0:53 2Q)

Texas A&M now trails by 24 points with just seconds left in the first half, as South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers connected with speedy WR Nyck Harbor for an 80-yard touchdown that has basically put this disaster of game for the Aggies to bed. South Carolina 24, Texas A&M 3.

Texas A&M's disastrous first half continues (2:20 1Q)

After S Dalton Brooks' interception that gave the Aggies great field position, wide receiver KC Concepcion dropped a perfectly thrown ball that would have given the Aggies their first touchdown, and cut into the 17-point lead. Well, kicker Randy Bond's bad day continued, missed a chip-shot field goal, resulting in zero points after the turnover. South Carolina 20, Texas A&M 3.

This game has gotten out of hand for the Aggies, as South Carolina dominated the home team on both sides of the ball, and while Texas A&M's defense forced a 41-yard field goal, the Gamecocks now lead 20-3 with just over nine minutes left in the first half.

Pregame:

It was reported this morning by multiple sources that Texas A&M and head coach Mike Elko are finalizing a six-year extension to keep him in College Station for the long term amid Penn State's pursuit of the New Jersey native. This was the right move, not just based on what Elko has accomplished so far, but what he's building on the recruiting trail.

Texas A&M wide receiver Mario Craver, who was listed as a game-time decision against South Carolina, will reportedly play, according to ESPN insider Pete Thamel, who noted that he was seen warming up during the pre-game portion.

Texas A&M senior running back Le 'Veon Moss, who is expected to return during one of the final two games during the regular season, is looking good heading out of the tunnel to support his team and get ready to take the field sooner than later.
