The Cleveland Cavaliers hope they added some needed shooting and backcourt depth by drafting Tyrese Proctor of Duke in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft on June 26.
The 49th overall pick of the draft, Proctor scored more than 1,100 points in three seasons with the Blue Devils. The 6-foot-4¼ guard averaged 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this past season as a junior.
Proctor delivered two huge performances in Duke's first two games of the NCAA Tournament. He scored 25 points, making seven 3-pointers, in a second-round win over Baylor after draining six 3s and scoring 19 points in a first-round rout of Mount St. Mary's.
Tyrese Proctor to Cavs in 2025 NBA draft grade: Instant reaction
-
Grade: B
-
Why: With it unclear that the Cavs can hang on to backup guards Ty Jerome and Sam Merrill , who are each free agents, Proctor provides the Cavs some insurance at the position. Proctor showed he can be knockdown shooter from 3-point range in his final season at Duke, hitting 40.5% of his 3s. He also proved to be a strong on-ball defender in college. He'll need to get stronger to defend in the NBA, but he has the length needed to become a good defensive player at this level. Combine that with his shooting, and he's got the ability to become a solid addition to the Cavs' rotation. And that's all a contending team can ask for out of a second-round pick this deep in the draft.
