The North Carolina Tar Heels have landed their first commitment in the 2025 transfer portal and its at a position of need for the program.

On Tuesday, shooting guard Jonathan Powell committed to the Tar Heels, hours after he had a meeting with the program over Zoom. That meeting was enough for him to commit and give UNC a much-needed wing for the 2025-26 roster.

The 6-foot-6, 191-pound freshman averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season while starting in 23 games for the Mountaineers. He shot 35.2 percent from the three-point line on the season including making 62 threes, leading all Big 12 freshmen.

Powell picked UNC over Ohio State and Ole Miss, two programs that showed interest in him.

With Elliot Cadeau transferring and RJ Davis out of eligibility, the Tar Heels need to fill those roles. Lamding Powell is a good start.
