On the opening drive of the game, it looked as if North Carolina was going to gain control of this contest and prove all the naysayers wrong. Gio Lopez looked strong, Caleb Hood was running with power; however, that's where the success ended. UNC ended up scoring just seven points after that first touchdown on the first drive, losing 48-14 against the Big 12 Conference's TCU at home in Kenan Stadium .
Lopez had 58 yards and a touchdown on the first drive of the game, while Hood had 24 yards of his game total of 31 yards on that first drive as well. It was his 8-yard touchdown run that sparked the fire in the first quarter. The defense immediately got a stop, but the offense failed to put up any further points until Max Johnson came into the game for an injured Lopez.
Johnson finished with 103 yards on 9-of-11 passing and a touchdown. Despite the injury to Lopez, which could answer this question more quickly, it will undoubtedly be a discussion in the coming week on whether Lopez or Johnson will be the starting quarterback in the team's Week 2 contest against Charlotte on Saturday.
On top of losing by 34 points, 48 points is the most points UNC has given up in a home opener in the team's history. In front of prestigious alumni, former NFL players, and a sold-out crowd, the Tar Heels ' defense allowed TCU 542 yards of total offense and 29 first downs. The Horned Frogs were 7-for-12 on third down conversions and caused UNC to commit three turnovers.
The Belichick experiment was not meant to be an immediate success. However, my people around the country left Monday night wondering if there would be a turnaround of the program. North Carolina will next be in action on Saturday, September 6, against Charlotte at 7:00 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
