UNC makes major announcement regarding start of 2025 football season

The start of college football season can't come quickly enough in Chapel Hill, with UNC set to play its first year under Bill Belichick , the legendary, 8-time Super Bowl Champion head coach.

North Carolina 's first game will be Monday, September 1 at 8 p.m. against TCU under the Kenan Stadium lights. Belichick's collegiate coaching debut will be broadcast on ESPN, putting the Tar Heels in a rare, national spotlight.

As if you couldn't be excited enough about UNC's season kicking off, Tuesday's announcement should further heighten that excitement.

North Carolina players and coaches will open fall camp on Saturday, August 2, signifying an official start to their 2025 campaign. Exactly 30 days later, the Tar Heels will turn a month's worth of intense practices and workouts into game action.

UNC should have plenty of positional battles on tap throughout training camp, most notably at quarterback. 2024 starter Max Johnson , who broke his leg in last season's opener at Minnesota, will compete with South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez and incoming 4-star Bryce Baker for North Carolina's starting QB role.

Positional battles don't stop at quarterback, though. The Tar Heels have five different tight ends to choose a starter from. UNC will have new starters across its defensive line, with seven guys finding their way to Chapel Hill via the transfer portal. There isn't a true WR1 on North Carolina's roster, but senior returner Kobe Paysour can step up and be that guy.

NFL Training Camps recently started, too, with former Tar Heel gunslinger Drake Maye earning early praise for his efforts.

When UNC's fall camp officially concludes, we'll have a much clearer picture of the roster outlook. Are you ready for some North Carolina football?
