The UNC football program has a thing for producing star running backs. Look at what Omarion Hampton did in 2023 and 2024, Michael Carter's two 1,000-yard seasons, or Ty Chandler during 2021.
The latest potential star back joining that mix is Demon June , a true freshman from Jacksonville (N.C.). June broke onto the scene during Week 2 at Charlotte, but thrived in his first collegiate start against Richmond on Saturday.
During North Carolina's postgame press conference, June spoke on his big game, which included 148 rushing yards and a touchdown, also his first in college.
"First all, just want to give credit to the O-line – for putting you in a position to have those type of runs," June said. As far as going north and south, that's the fastest way to get somewhere. When you're trying to score, you just put your head down and run. They all feel pretty good, but...to come together with the guys, after it being so long, for us being able to showcase all the stuff that we work on. Today definitely is one of those highs, but like I said, without the other 10 guys, it wouldn't have happened."
June is no stranger to big moments, scoring six touchdowns in an October 2024 high school game for his Jacksonville Cardinals. Saturday was the first of what he hope are many big moments for UNC's budding, true freshman star.
The Tar Heels entered Saturday with a running back-by-committee approach . With June's breakout game against Richmond, though, I wouldn't be surprised if North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick names June the Week 4 starter.
