The North Carolina Tar Heels returned home to Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon , facing a ranked Virginia Cavaliers squad proving to be an early-season surprise in the ACC.
UNC's defense gave it a chance throughout the game, sacking Chandler Morris five times and holding UVA to 259 yards, but lost a 17-16 heartbreaker in overtime.
Virginia (7-1, 4-0 ACC) scored in its first possession of extra time, with running back J'Mari Taylor punching the football in from one yard out. North Carolina (2-5, 0-3 ACC) responded immediately, thanks to a 9-yard touchdown reception from Davion Gause on a swing pass.
Instead of tying the game and extending overtime, the Tar Heels went for two, which many agreed with. Gio Lopez completed a pass in the flat to running back Benjamin Hall, who then raced Cavalier defenders to the goal line.
Hall extended the football, only for it to fall an inch short of the goal line. For the second-straight week, UNC suffered a heartbreaking defeat – in a game it nearly won.
North Carolina racked up 353 yards of offense, but struggled with just 107 yards in the second half. The Tar Heels consistently failed to finish drives, highlighted by another goal-line fumble and missed Rece Verhoff field goal.
The Tar Heels controlled the line of scrimmage, sacking UVA quarterback Chandler Morris six times. Delaware transfer Melkart Abou-Jaoude notched six of those sacks, while UNC neutralized the Cavaliers' run game.
Alas, North Carolina turns its attention to a Halloween contest at Syracuse. Will the pain and suffering ever end in Chapel Hill?
UNC loses by an inch.
The Tar Heels score on their first overtime possession, with Gio Lopez completing the swing pass to Davion Gause. North Carolina goes for the ensuing 2-point try, with Lopez looking to Benjamin Hall in the flat.
Virginia tackles Hall and as he extends, the football appears to be JUST short of the goal-line. The Cavaliers escape Chapel Hill with a 17-16 win.
