The Jacksonville University women's basketball team achieved a major program milestone on Nov. 16. Still, coach Special Jennings said her formula for winning remains the same, regardless of who the Dolphins play.
"We go in and we just try to prepare to win and give ourselves a chance to win every game ... it doesn't matter who's in front of us," Jennings told the JU athletics website after the Dolphins stunned 2024-25 NCAA Tournament team Georgia Tech 69-64 at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. "We just try to play the right way, share the basketball, be gritty, play hard, be tough."
That script delivered the first victory for Jennings in her three years at the JU coach over a Power Four Conference team, and the first for JU (3-1) since beating Minnesota 69-66 to open the 2021 season.
The Dolphins won their fourth victory over an ACC team and their first since beating Wake Forest 72-66 on Dec. 17, 2010. Jacksonville had lost two previous meetings against the Yellow Jackets (2-2), the last coming on March 17, 2017, in the NCAA Tournament first round.
The Dolphins are also the first ASUN team to beat a Power Four team this season.
Senior guard Priscilla Williams leads rally
Jacksonville trailed 34-26 at halftime but took the lead for good by outscoring Tech 25-15 in the third quarter.
JU senior guard Priscilla Williams , who was named the ASUN Player of the Week, scored 13 of her game-high 29 points in the third period, and gave the Dolphins a 42-41 lead on a 3-pointer with 3:58 left in the period.
It capped an 11-0 run from a 41-31 deficit early in the period.
Freshman guard Tatum Brown, returning to the Atlanta area where she was a high school all-star, added a 3-pointer and another basket during the third quarter, and Makiya Miller had a pair of 3-point shots.
Georgia Tech tied the score twice after that but Williams put JU ahead to stay with a foul shot, followed by a steal and a 3-pointer by Miller.
Williams had 'that look in her eyes'
Williams had 29 points on 9 of 16 from the floor, 3 of 6 from beyond the arc and 8 of 13 from the foul line. She added 10 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double to start the season and had four assists.
Miller had nine points and Brown had six points and seven rebounds.
"When she's locked in and she's focused, and she has that look in her eyes, man, it's her world," Jennings said of Williams, who lead the ASUN in rebounding with 10.3 per game and is fifth in scoring at 16.5 points per game. "I'm excited for her. She's worked hard for this, so she deserves it."
Williams is the only player in the ASUN averaging in double digits in points and rebounds and has a streak of 11 games in a row in double-figure scoring.
