The Detroit Tigers had the lead in Game 2 of the wild-card series against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
And then they didn't.
With the Tigers losing 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Javier Báez came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and a chance to do some damage.
The much-maligned Báez delivered.
He lined a ball up the middle to easily drive in Riley Greene from third as Dillon Dingler rounded third for what should've been the go-ahead run.
However, Zach McKinstry tried to take advantage of the situation as well and went for third base, where there was a bang-bang play. McKinstry was originally ruled safe, but the Guardians challenged the call and after a lengthy review, the umpires announced that not only was McKinstry out, but that he was out before Dingler crossed the plate.
That meant the go-ahead run was ripped off the board and we were back to a tie game.
It was a controversial call because it looked like McKinstry may have gotten his right hand to the base in time, but the review determined there was enough video evidence to overturn the call.
