- Why complacency is like 'rodents' to Alabama football before South Carolina game
Kane Wommack isn't one to take a breath. But after the run Alabama football's defense has seen over its past four games, the Crimson Tide defensive coordinator did take a moment to reflect.
Four top-15 SEC wins, two of which came on the road. Wommack led Alabama against teams that were "somehow" always ranked "number one in the SEC in scoring offense." And by game's end, the offensive production for each unit was nearly halved.
South Carolina is not that way. Despite being led by the once-Heisman hopeful quarterback LaNorris Sellers , the Gamecocks are at the bottom of the SEC in scoring offense (20.14 points per game) and total offense (297.7 yards per game).
But Wommack sees danger. And he has a team that sees the danger too. It represents a wider lens this Alabama football team is taking into Columbia on Saturday, October. 25. It's why Alabama still carries its edge.
"We have learned from the mistakes of the past, and we haven't forgotten about those things and those are things that we need to make sure that we carry throughout the rest of the season," Wommack said. "Success, if handled properly and not allowing complacency — which complacency will creep into any area that you allow it."
And then Wommack began his analogy.
"It's like rodents getting into your house, right? Once they're in, right, it's hard to get them out," Wommack said. "Complacency is exactly the same way. You have to find ways to shore up any area for us as a football team to make sure complacency isn't there."
Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer doesn't see complacency. He sees momentum from the Crimson Tide's wins against Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Tennessee .
"That's what's got us to this point where every game means so much and we've got to, tomorrow morning, come with the edge that we have had," DeBoer said. "I expect that from our guys."
Alabama kicks off against South Carolina at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on ABC.
