HOUSTON — Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec , his wife Patty, and their sons Tyler and Cory were all in Houston on Saturday, Oct. 4, for a football game.
Two football games, actually — at stadiums less than 5 miles apart, but with games kicking off at the same time. Tyler Schovanec is the special teams coach for Florida Atlantic , whose head coach is former Texas Tech football offensive coordinator Zach Kittley .
While FAU was getting ready to play Rice at 6 p.m., No. 14 Texas Tech was gearing up to play Houston at the same time. They could have gone to both had the kickoff times been staggered.
Just the Schovanecs' luck.
"So Tyler's over there by himself," Lawrence Schovanec said before kickoff at TDECU Stadium. "But it's good to know that his wife is there. At least I think she is."

Counting Kittley and Tyler Schovanec, 11 members of the Florida Atlantic coaching staff or support staff, played, coached or otherwise worked for Texas Tech. Tyler Schovanec was a special-teams assistant for the Red Raiders under special teams coordinator Kenny Perry before Kittley got the FAU job last December and populated his staff with the Tech contingent.
"Kenny Perry and I drove over to their hotel to visit and had dinner last night," Lawrence Schovanec said, "and then Patty and I went today to see him. Blood's pretty important. I guess our connection to Texas Tech runs deeper."

At the joking suggestion he was abandoning his son, Schovanec said, "I'm blaming the mother on this. I blame the mom. She should have gone over there."
Schovanec said the family plans to see a Florida Atlantic game during a late-season open date for the Red Raiders .
Going into Saturday's game, Rice was 3-2, Florida Atlantic 1-3. Tech and Houston went into their showdown both 4-0.
"You think we're going to miss this game?" Lawrence Schovanec said. "This game is important. It's all lining up for us."
Discussing Tyler Schovanec's FAU games, his father said, "Actually, it makes me very nervous. I'm nervous watching him more than I am watching Tech, because you want your son to do well."
During Tyler Schovanec's time working with Tech special teams, Red Raiders kickers Trey Wolff and Gino Garcia excelled. So did punter Austin McNamara , who's now with the New York Jets .
"Kenny Perry and him are really, really close," Lawrence Schovanec said. "Tyler owes so much to Kenny Perry."
