The Chicago Cubs absorbed their fourth straight loss after falling to the Atlanta Braves , 4-1, at Truist Park on Wednesday, with Mauricio Dubon delivering the two-run blast to seal the well-deserved win.
The Cubs fell to 27-16 . They entered the season expecting to heavily contend in the National League after reaching the division series last season.
Chicago tried to improve not only its roster in the offseason, but also its front office. According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the team tried to hire two former stars who helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. They, however, begged off .
"The Cubs spoke with Jason Heyward and Kyle Hendricks about re-joining the organization, but they both went elsewhere. The (Chicago) White Sox also talked with Heyward," wrote Rogers on X.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Heyward signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a special assistant in baseball operations. Hendricks, meanwhile, joined the Detroit Tigers earlier this month as a special assistant to the president. They both retired after last season.
Heyward and Hendricks played for the Cubs from 2016 to 2022 and 2014 to 2024, respectively. Heyward, who just retired in March, won the Gold Glove Award four times in Chicago, while Hendricks led the league in ERA in 2016.
Heyward appeared in 34 games for the San Diego Padres last season. Kendricks suited up in 31 outings for the Los Angeles Angels .
In a report from the Associated Press, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Heyward will be "very helpful" in his return to the organization. Heyward played for the Dodgers from 2023 to 2024.
"I'm excited for Jason to be back in the organization. I do know that he's going to do some stuff with the affiliates, which is great. He's got the clubhouse part covered, so part of it is working with the front office guys and getting to see the other side of things and how it operates," said Roberts.
The Cubs will battle the Braves for the third straight time on Thursday.
