David Bailey Elite Pass-Rush Ability Is Exactly What the Jets Defense Needs

First, let's get the obvious out of the way, the New York Jets ' defense was terrible in 2025. The Jets' pass rush became one of the weakest in the league after they traded away defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and cornerback Sauce Gardner at the deadline . The team let other quarterbacks play comfortably all season, giving up 29.6 points per game and ranking 31st in defensive impact. No coaching staff can keep that up, and Aaron Glenn, a former cornerback who became known as a defensive genius, knows better than anyone that a strong edge rusher changes everything.

David Bailey is the most explosive pass rusher in the 2026 draft class, according to many experts. The 6-foot-3, 251-pound senior from Texas Tech had an amazing 14.5 sacks, 52 total tackles, and 19.5 tackles for loss during the 2025 college season alone. Over his four-year college career across Stanford and Texas Tech, Bailey accumulated 29 career sacks and 41 tackles for loss.

Those are the production numbers for each generation. Scouts love how quickly he gets off the line of scrimmage, how he can win right away with a burst before offensive tackles can set their feet, and how well he fights with his hands. He has a ghost rush, a rip move, a spin, and a long-arm, which is a full set of moves. His 4.50 40-yard dash and a 35-inch vertical at the NFL Combine confirmed that the athleticism is every bit as elite in person as it looks on tape.

One scouting report from Read Optional projected Bailey as a "Quality Starter" with a Top-10 draft grade, while others have drawn comparisons to Micah Parsons , the kind of transformative disruptor who can single-handedly elevate an entire defense. The Jets have been without that kind of player since Muhammad Wilkerson was in his prime, and Bailey represents the chance to finally bring that identity back to Florham Park.

His Scheme Versatility Fits Perfectly With Aaron Glenn's Defensive Vision

There is another layer to this fit that goes beyond raw statistics: David Bailey is precisely the type of multi-dimensional defender that Glenn wants to build his scheme around. Glenn ran an aggressive, pressure-heavy system in Detroit as defensive coordinator, one that demanded edge rushers who could do more than just pin their ears back and run around the tackle. He needed players who could drop into coverage, rush from multiple alignments, and set the edge against the run when called upon. Bailey checks all of those boxes.

Scouts have noted that Bailey is comfortable and fluid when spot-dropping in zone coverage, an increasingly critical skill in today's pass-heavy NFL where tight ends and running backs constantly stress linebackers and edge defenders in space. He has also proven he can line up in both two-point and three-point stances with zero drop-off in explosiveness, giving a defensive coordinator maximum flexibility in how he deploys him on any given play.

Bailey is only 22 years old, so he still has a lot of room to grow, especially in run defense anchoring and pass-rush plan refinement. A coaching staff like Glenn's can definitely help him with these things over time and with the right techniques.. NFL draft analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Peter Schrager have both reported that the Jets are internally leaning toward Bailey over fellow edge prospect Arvell Reese at the No. 2 spot, and Bailey is now the betting favorite at -120 odds to be the second overall pick. The buzz is real, and it makes complete sense.

The Jets have spent years cycling through quarterbacks and watching the roster crumble around them. This draft is different. With Glenn at the helm and a front office determined to build from the defensive line out, selecting David Bailey with the No. 2 pick would send a message to the rest of the AFC: the Jets are done being a pushover, and they are building something that will make opposing offenses miserable for years to come.
