The defensive ends wasted no time making their presence felt at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis . In a league that increasingly values speed off the edge and the ability to disrupt quarterbacks, this year's edge group showed exactly why they are among the most coveted prospects in the draft.
From the moment testing began at Lucas Oil Stadium, defensive ends displayed a rare blend of explosiveness and power. The 40-yard dash remains one of the most talked-about drills, and several edge rushers posted eye-opening times that highlighted their burst off the line. For players whose primary job is to chase down quarterbacks and running backs in space, straight-line speed can significantly impact draft evaluations.
Beyond speed, scouts paid close attention to measurements and agility drills. Arm length and wingspan are especially important for defensive ends, as longer reach allows them to disengage from offensive tackles and disrupt passing lanes. Broad jumps and vertical jumps measured lower-body explosiveness, a key trait for winning the first step battle at the snap. Meanwhile, three-cone and shuttle drills tested bend and change-of-direction ability, both crucial for turning the corner and finishing sacks.
On Thursday night, Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese solidified himself as one of the stars of the 2026 NFL Draft class with an incredible 4.46-second 40-yard dash, which he ran at 241 pounds. Reese is nearly a lock to go high in the first round, and seems to be the favorite for the New York Jets to take at No. 2 overall.
