The San Francisco 49ers are just days away from playing in their first preseason game. Ahead of that matchup, the 49ers have released their first depth chart .
There aren't too many surprises on the depth chart, but there is still much that can change between now and Week 1. This week, the 49ers are holding joint practices with the Titans, and then they'll play the Titans on Thursday. Starters aren't expected to play in the preseason opener, which means some bubble players are going to get a big opportunity.
Today, we're going to talk about three players who are in the best position to move up the depth chart in the next three weeks.
RB Khalil Herbert
On Tuesday's depth chart, Herbert is listed as the fourth-string running back, with Sincere McCormick . On the surface, that makes it seem like Herbert has little to no chance of making the roster.
However, Herbert has a few things going for him. For one, Herbert has more experience than the 49ers' other depth running backs . Additionally, Herbert has kick returning experience, and special teams is usually what makes the difference in these battles.
Plus, the 49ers' running back room has been ravaged by injuries this summer, which means Herbert should get plenty of opportunities.
WR De'Zhaun Stribling
The biggest surprise on the team's depth chart is seeing Demarcus Robinson listed as a starting wide receiver. Rookie De'Zhaun Stribling is listed as a second-stringer, alongside Christian Kirk .
If you've been paying attention to camp, though, you know Stribling has been a summer standout. The receiver has earned rave reviews for his physicality and speed, and it won't be surprising to see him become a starter sooner than later.
The 49ers are likely just bringing Stribling along slowly. Robinson knows the offense, which is why he's so high on the depth chart, but there's no denying that Stribling is more talented.
EDGE Ogbo Okoronkwo
Ogbo Okoronkwo is one of the newest 49ers , but he shouldn't be counted out. The edge rusher is currently buried on the depth chart, behind Nick Bosa , Romello Height, and Quinton Bell .
The thing is, other than Bosa, Okoronkwo has more experience than the other edge rushers. The veteran has actually been a quality rotational edge rusher in the past, and if he catches on to the playbook quickly, he could easily launch himself up.
The 49ers' pass rush unit was bad in 2026. Behind the starters, there is definitely room for a player to steal a spot.
