The crisp breeze of late summer is just around the corner, which can only mean one thing in Ann Arbor: football is back. The countdown is officially under four weeks. There are just four more Saturdays standing between Michigan football fans and the thunderous roar of 110,000 faithful bursting out of the tunnel at the Big House.
When Saturday, September 5 rolls around, the Wolverines will take the field under the lights against Western Michigan to kick off the 2026 campaign. Expectations, as always, run sky-high in Ann Arbor. With a revamped roster, fresh schematic wrinkles, and a electric home slate on the horizon, the anticipation around Schembechler Hall is palpable.
As kickoff draws nearer, here are four players to keep a close eye on for the Wolverines this season.
1. Bryce Underwood | Quarterback (#19)
All eyes in the college football landscape will naturally drift toward the quarterback room, where blue-chip talent Bryce Underwood leads the offense into a new era. Armed with an elite arm, remarkable composure in the pocket, and dual-threat athleticism that keeps defensive coordinators up at night, Underwood represents the highest-upside signal-caller Ann Arbor has seen in years.
How quickly Underwood establishes chemistry with his targets will dictate Michigan 's offensive ceiling early in the year. If he can hit his stride during non-conference play, Michigan's offense won't just be dynamic—it will be flat-out dangerous.
2. Jordan Marshall | Running Back (#23)
Michigan football has built its brand on physical, dominant ground attacks, and Jordan Marshall is primed to be the engine of that backfield. Entering the 2026 season with enhanced size and explosive initial burst, Marshall possesses the ideal blend of vision between the tackles and open-field speed to break big plays.
In an offense that loves to dictate tempo and wear down opponents in the second half, Marshall's ability to shoulder a heavy workload will be critical. Expect him to be a focal point of the offense from the very first snap against Western Michigan.
3. Jyaire Hill | Cornerback (#0)
On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Jyaire Hill is stepping up as the unquestioned primary playmaker in the secondary. Known for his physical press coverage, instincts on the ball, and competitive toughness, Hill has developed into the type of perimeter defender who can effectively lock down an entire side of the field.
With high-powered passing attacks waiting down the road in Big Ten play, having a lock-down corner is a necessity. Hill's growth as a defensive anchor and leader in the secondary will set the tone for how aggressive the defense can play up front.
4. Trey Pierce | Defensive Tackle (#95)
As Michigan transitions under the new defensive staff, Trey Pierce has emerged as a cornerstone of the interior defensive line. Entering the 2026 season, Pierce is expected to shoulder a significantly larger workload following key departures on the interior.
A physically imposing presence, Pierce is known for his ability to "clog lanes" and hold his ground against double teams—a trait essential for the aggressive, attacking style of defense Michigan plans to employ this year. While he spent much of his early career focusing on gap discipline, expectations are high that he will become more of a disruptive force in the backfield this season. If he can consistently win his one-on-one battles at the point of attack, he will be the primary reason Michigan's run defense remains a nightmare for opposing Big Ten offensive coordinators.
Other notables to keep in your back pocket:
Andrew Babalola (OL, #65) : A highly touted talent expected to compete immediately for a starting job at tackle, reinforcing a critical position group.
Mason Bonner (TE, #18): A towering 6'7" freshman who serves as a massive red-zone target and a unique mismatch weapon for the Wolverines' passing attack as he continues to develop.
The four-week wait will fly by as fall camp wraps up, depth charts solidify, and game plans are drawn up. The tailgates on Main Street are getting ready, the Big House turf is prepped, and the Maize and Blue are set to make their return. Four Saturdays will be gone in a flash—and then, it's game time in Ann Arbor.
