The defending Super Bowl champions kicked off their preseason with a disappointing 17-7 home loss to the Dallas Cowboys . Mike Macdonald's team held out the starters, so it was easy to make a proper assessment of most things.
However, with so many roster bubble guys looking to make a name for themselves, this was the perfect opportunity to earn their stripes and climb the ranks. While some showed flashes, others didn't rise to the occasion.
Considering that, let's talk about the four players who didn't help their chances of getting significant playing time or making the roster this season. It's still early, but they will have plenty of catching up to do.
The Seahawks have a plethora of options at cornerback. Of course, no one's challenging the recently extended Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe for the starting job on the boundary, so that means there are way more candidates than available roster spots for the backups.
Shemar Jean-Charles was already on the outside looking in with Terrion Arnold 's arrival, and he didn't do himself any favors vs. the Cowboys' backups. He was flagged for a huge pass interception on third down and always seemed to be one step behind his mark. He allowed a big catch for a touchdown late in the second quarter.
Likewise, Michael Dansby's chances of making the 53-man roster were always rather bleak. He was probably more of a developmental Day 3 pick destined for the practice squad anyway, and he was on the wrong end of one of the biggest plays of the evening.
Cowboys rookie Camden Brown made the play of a lifetime, Mossing him in the end zone for a now-viral touchdown grab that may help him make the roster. For Dansby, however, it was a big example of how his lack of high-end speed and slimmer frame will cost him against high-end competition.
Ricky White III did next to nothing as a rookie, but as a second-year player, people expected him to at least make his presence felt against third-stringers. Instead, Montorie Foster Jr got snaps ahead of him, and he only had one reception for four yards.
White's value has always been on special teams, so he's not getting on the field with that unit; there's literally no reason to even consider keeping him around. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba , Cooper Kupp , Rashid Shaheed , Jake Bobo , and Tory Horton all potential locks, there's no room for him.
Jalen Milroe showed some signs of improvement, but not enough for him to be safe. While he looked more comfortable in the pocket at times and didn't resort to scrambling as his first instinct, a botched snap showed some of the same execution issues that plagued him in last year's preseason and in Alabama.
Expectations were higher for the second-year quarterback. Brian Fleury wants to see him prove that he can play quarterback before drawing up plays for him in special packages, and if he can't beat Drew Lock for the QB2 job, he simply may not have what it takes.
