49ers officially sign oldest player to 1-year contract extension
The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday officially avoided free agency with their oldest player.
Long snapper Jon Weeks officially inked a one-year contract extension according to an announcement from the team. The announcement confirmed what general manager John Lynch said would happen during his press conference at the NFL combine.
It's not a huge surprise the 49ers got a deal done with the 41-year-old. He spent last season with the team and wasn't likely to have a major market in free agency. By signing now he gets a one-year extension and the 49ers check a box on their offseason to-do list.
Weeks isn't just one piece of the 49ers' specialist unit. Punter Thomas Morstead and kicker Eddy Pineiro are also due to hit free agency and don't have extensions yet. There's a chance Morstead hangs up his pads, and Pineiro may want to explore the free agent market after his stellar 2025 campaign in San Francisco .
One thing the 49ers won't have to worry about is a change in their placekicking and punting operation. Weeks gives them another year of stability with a veteran up front entering his 17th NFL season.
Weeks landed in the NFL in 2010 as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans . He spent his first 15 seasons with Houston before joining the 49ers last year. He's also played all 261 possible games across his first 16 years in the league. His 261 games are tied for the 44th-most all-time and seventh among active players.
