The San Francisco 49ers have suffered a number of injuries so far this season, and their defensive line has been hit the hardest by these injuries. They have been without Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, Sam Okuayinonu, CJ West and Alfred Collins, which has left them thin up front.
But now, they may be just starting to become a little healthier.
Williams, who tore his ACL in Week 9 of last season and hasn't played since, has been activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. That means he will be available to play on Sunday when the 49ers take on the Seattle Seahawks, the defending Super Bowl champions, at Lumen Field.
In addition, Bosa said that his injured calf is healing well and that he could return as early as Oct. 19, when San Francisco plays against the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.
Amidst their flurry of injuries, the Niners signed veteran pass rusher Matthew Judon two weeks ago. He played in one game and had a total of one tackle.
Judon is moving on
Nick Wagoner of ESPN reported that Judon has been released from San Francisco's practice squad. The 34-year-old hadn't played this season prior to coming to the team.
In another move, San Francisco signed defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo to its practice squad after he had been released on Friday. Through four games this year, he had registered two tackles (two solo), three quarterback hits and one sack. He had previously won a Super Bowl championship as a member of the Los Angeles Rams during the 2021 season.
Williams' return may not make a huge impact on the team, but he, at the very least, will be a warm body who can be an innings eater. Last year, he had 20 total tackles (11 solo), three quarterback hits, four tackles for loss and one sack prior to his ACL injury.
He can line up either on the edge or the interior of the defensive line, which will come in handy for a Niners team that will still be short-handed for a while.
