49ers reportedly land DeForest Buckner for fourth-round pick in trade with Colts originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
The 49ers reunited with a familiar face.
San Francisco acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.
Rapoport also reported that the 49ers are sending the Colts a 2027 fourth-round draft pick in the deal.
The 32-year-old Buckner, who San Francisco selected with the No. 7 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the 49ers, where he was selected to a Pro Bowl in 2018 before he was traded to Indianapolis for a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft that became defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.
In seven games with the Colts this season, Buckner has 31 combined tackles (11 solo, 20 assisted), four tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, three passes defensed, one fumble recovery and four sacks.
Buckner originally signed a two-year, $46 million contract extension with Indianapolis in April of 2024, and has a $7.9 million salary cap hit this season before he is set to become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason.
The 49ers' defensive line has held up admirably this season in defensive end Nick Bosa's absence, but another solid pass-rusher and run-stopper like Buckner certainly can elevate the unit as a whole.
Now heading into their Week 8 bye, San Francisco will have plenty of time to get Buckner acclimated to new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris' system before the Week 9 game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders at Levi's Stadium.
