The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with some depth issues at linebacker, as Dre Greenlaw is suspended and Garret Wallow is recovering from a hamstring injury that he suffered in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks .
Knowing that, the 49ers hosted four linebackers for workouts on Wednesday, and according to KNBR's Larry Krueger , San Francisco is signing Eugene Asante from the bunch.
Asante, 25, played collegiately at North Carolina from 2019-21 and at Auburn from 2022-24. Between the two schools, he played 65 games and recorded 196 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. He also earned All-SEC honors once.
After going undrafted in 2025, Asante has bounced around, spending time with the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals in the NFL, and the Houston Gamblers in the UFL.
While he's yet to play a game in the NFL, he appeared in nine UFL games in 2026, recording 34 tackles, two passes defensed and two forced fumbles.
